{NAME}, From the day my boys were born, I've made a point to read with them. Now that they're getting older, they can't wait to show off their own reading skills. Together, we have embarked on countless adventures, saving Metropolis alongside Superman, delving into the vast world of Star Wars, and laughing until our sides hurt as a persistent pigeon tries to convince us to let him drive the bus. Books bring people together. So it saddens me to learn that stories depicting Asian-American kids bringing sushi for lunch or teaching their peers how to say their Korean names have been removed from the shelves of classrooms and libraries. Books that beautifully portray what it means to be a first, second, third, or fourth-generation AAPI have faced bans all across the nation. Banning these books sends the unmistakable message that APPI stories somehow aren't "American" enough. But our stories aren't just Asian American stories, they're American stories. My boys deserve to see themselves represented on the pages of their books and to know that our lives are part of the rich tapestry of U.S. history. My boys deserve to expand their worldview by reading stories about Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQI+ characters without fear of bans. Every kid deserves that. In books and stories, we can find common ground and foster understanding. Banning books only serves to deepen the divide we are facing. I want my boys to grow up in a world where everyone's stories are not just allowed but celebrated. More soon, Andy Paid for by Andy Kim for Congress.
