{NAME}, The debt ceiling fight is about to come to a head. Here's some background: the debt ceiling is the amount of money the federal government can borrow to pay its obligations — things like Social Security payments and military servicemember salaries. Currently, Republican leaders in Washington won't agree to raise the debt ceiling without cruel cuts to important programs. [We need a House majority that is full of leaders committed to public service. That's why we're building up our grassroots movement now, and we need you, {NAME}. Will you donate $15 today and power our movement for change?]( We need to be a fiscally responsible country and ensure our programs run as effectively as possible and help as many people as possible. But that's not what this standoff is about. For one thing: It's worth noting that when Trump was in office, I voted alongside Republicans to raise the debt ceiling without any stipulations, despite the former president adding more to our national debt than any other president with his massive tax cuts for billionaires. For another, their proposal slashes programs for veterans, rental assistance, education, and food assistance. These programs are not only critical to helping families live with dignity, they also strengthen our economy – slashing them won't lower the national debt. We need to raise the debt ceiling so we can pay existing obligations. In other words, we have bills due and we have to pay them. Full stop. The Washington Republicans holding our economy hostage don't care about spending, and they don't care about the people they will hurt because of their political gamesmanship. This debt ceiling fight is based only on partisan politics. They are putting Americans and America in a lose-lose situation. If the debt ceiling is not raised, tens of thousands of seniors could lose Social Security benefits, military servicemembers could miss paychecks, and thousands of Americans could lose their jobs. Instead of coming together to serve the people, Republicans have chosen to hold our country hostage. This is not what leadership looks like. [It's time for a change. Help secure a House majority that cares more about the American people than partisan politics by joining our grassroots movement with a $15 donation.]( I'm committed to fighting for a clean debt ceiling bill that protects Americans.
