Your gift this week unlocks $100 for human rights [View in Browser]( [Amnesty International candle logo]( [Your Amnesty Giving Week donation unlocks $100 to end the death penalty once and for all. Button: Rush your support]( {NAME}, the death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment. We just released our annual report1 on global death sentences and executions, and the numbers are discouraging. But please know this: Your support is advancing research and action to make change. When we began our global campaign to abolish the death penalty in 1977, only 16 countries were abolitionist. Today, that number has risen to 112 — nearly two-thirds of the world’s countries.2 With your help, we can prevent more people from being executed. No more lethal injection, beheading, hanging, shooting anywhere, including here in the U.S. [A gift from you will unlock $100 from a generous donor to stop urgent cases of executions and mobilize action that will abolish the death penalty. Please act fast as this offer is only available for the first 500 people who give this Amnesty Giving Week »]( In the past year, in countries where the death penalty still exists, we’ve recorded a major spike in the number of people known to have been executed. The number increased to 883 executions last year, from 579 in 2021 — and that doesn’t count thousands of executions we believe to have taken place in China.3 Many of these individuals were executed after coerced confessions. They have families. Some hadn’t reached their 18th birthday. The overwhelming majority of known executions were carried out in Iran and Saudi Arabia, where authorities use the death penalty as a tool of repression. People are being tortured to force “confessions” in grossly unfair trials with no opportunities to challenge their convictions as authorities continue unchecked on a campaign of cruelty.4 We can’t allow the death penalty to continue. [Make a gift now and an extra $100 will be added to your impact to help end the death penalty everywhere.]( This offer applies to the first 500 supporters who choose to make a difference during Amnesty Giving Week. [Yes, I will give!]( {NAME}, while the use of the death penalty remains a grave concern around the world, the power of our movement gives me reason for hope. Thanks to our movement’s efforts to campaign to end the death penalty, the world is taking remarkable steps towards abolition. A substantial number of countries are becoming abolitionist: During 2022, Central African Republic, Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea, and Sierra Leone became the latest countries to abolish the death penalty for all crimes, while Equatorial Guinea and Zambia abolished the death sentence from their criminal and penal code. [With your gift, we can do more to end the death penalty, add more countries to this list, and stop executions — including in the United States.]( [Before this offer expires, make your Amnesty Giving Week gift to deliver an additional $100 to end cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment around the world.]( Thank you for doing your part, Justin Mazzola Deputy Director of Research Amnesty International USA [1] [( [2] Amnesty International Global Report: Death Sentences And Executions 2022, Page 8 [3] Amnesty International Global Report: Death Sentences And Executions 2022, Page 7 [4] [( [Amnesty Giving Week: Make a gift by May 31 to shine a light on injustice.
