I have found over the past few years that if I follow the next three golden rules, I have way more fun and actually get to hang out with my friends and family. Have a Game Plan: A few weeks before the event, take some time to map out what the day will look like. Plan your menu, including cocktails and wine choices, and figure out when you will go grocery shopping, get the kids dressed—you know, stuff like that. Delegate: Now that you have your menu planned, reach out to your guests to see if they want to take on one of the courses (apps! dessert! sides! any of those things that end up sneaking up on you). And don’t forget the wine or cocktails! Someone may be superexcited to make them or bring some wine they’ve been saving. And delegating isn’t just for food—have someone clean for you, set the table for you, even go to the grocery store for you! Make-Ahead: There are so many things that can be made ahead of time. I find that if I take the extra step to find recipes that can be prepared and stored in the fridge or freezer, I am a much happier gal on the day of.
