Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 [] July 26, 2024 [] Reader, One of the first things I learned in rehab studies during my med school residency was that thereâs a 90% chance you will suffer from back pain at some point in your lifetime. And that more than a quarter of Americans are living with lower back pain at any given time.1 Sadly, I see this play out with my own patients day after day⦠Thatâs why I was so excited to read about an exciting new study published in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation. In the study, researchers found that combining two plants â ginger and Chinese chaste tree â relieves debilitating back pain in almost 80% of patients⦠Starting in just one week.2 The team recruited 72 patients between the ages of 18 and 60. All reported back pain for at least seven weeks. The volunteers were given either a blend of the plants or a placebo. Researchers examined the plant comboâs impact on functional activity, such as flexibility, work productivity, and sleep quality. All of these can be significantly affected by lower back pain. They also studied the sustained effect of the herbal remedies after the treatment ended. Compared to the placebo, participants who took the blend of ginger and Chinese chaste tree âdemonstrated a significant reductionâ in pain. After one month, volunteers who took the plant combination were performing physical tasks more easily, working more productively, and sleeping more soundly. In fact:3 - 79% noted major improvement in lower back pain.
- 77% noted major improvement in functional activity.
- Tests revealed a 40% improvement in bending flexibility. Most importantly, researchers didnât identify any adverse effects. Iâve been recommending ginger to my patients for decades. For centuries, itâs been used throughout Asia to treat indigestion, colds, and pain in the muscles and joints. Ginger contains 12 different compounds that fight inflammation. Some block the Cox-2 enzyme which triggers it. Some lower pain receptors and nerve-ending sensitivity. Together they work almost the same as anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.4 And when ginger is combined with chaste tree, they work together to knock out your bodyâs inflammatory âcommand center.â You see, your body has a âswitchâ that activates more than 400 pro-inflammatory genes. Itâs a molecule called nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB). This molecule controls nearly 98% of all diseases. But it canât stand up to the knockout punch of this plant combo which deactivates NF-kB. I recommend 100 mg of chaste tree extract and 100 mg of ginger daily. Look for a ginger supplement that contains 5% gingerols. More Back Pain Relief Without Drugs Chinese chaste tree and ginger are just two natural ways you can relieve stubborn back pain without resorting to Big Pharmaâs drugs. Here are some other ways I tell my patients to get the relief they need: - Go for a swim. Swimming is an effective way to smooth out your back muscles while relieving tension in your spine. When youâre in the water, your spine expands, and blood circulation improves. Taking a hot shower can also reduce swelling and encourage your blood to flow more freely. - Stay hydrated. The health of your spine depends in large part on how much water you drink. Your spineâs discs function as cushions for each vertebra, and are made of a fluid, jelly-like substance largely made out of water. When youâre hydrated, they have the support they need to keep you comfortable â and reduce unnecessary strain. - Stretch your spine. I recommend stretching your spine every day with this simple exercise I call a modified âSuperman stretch.â It engages your entire back. And it helps build back strength. Hereâs what you do: - Lay on your stomach with your legs straight and your arms extended over your head.
- Inhale through your nose while you lift your head. At the same time lift and stretch your right arm and left leg away from each other. Hold for a few seconds.
- Exhale through your mouth and release down to the floor.
- Repeat on the other side, lifting and reaching your left arm and right leg away from each other. Hold for a few seconds.
- Exhale through your mouth and release to the floor.
- Next, inhale through your nose while you lift your head. At the same time lift both arms and both legs and reach them away from each other. Hold for a few seconds.
- Repeat the sequence two to five times.
