Iâm feeling spicy today ð¶ï¸ In case ya haven't noticed, {NAME} Iâm feeling a little spicy today ð¶ï¸ð¶ï¸ð¶ï¸ And, since it's Friday, letâs have some fun and play a little game. I call it... [How to not get hired](. I get cold outreach emails and DMs every single day. Every.single.day. And so is every other entrepreneur and business owner you want to work with. Think about that for a second... Your email is not special. They have not been waiting for your DM. As a complete stranger on the Internet, your message is lumped in with all the other impersonal, generic and spammy emails they get daily that they never signed up for... And if I had to do the math from my own inbox... 95% of them are god-awful and get trashed before I even open them (yes, I can tell just from the subject line how bad they are). 4% of them are great for a good laugh.... and then get trashed. And maybe 1% of them actually get my attention â mayyyyyybe 1%. Because here's the deal... Cold outreach messages are kind of like that tuna sandwich your mom packed for your lunch that one time in 8th grade⦠You can smell its stench oozing from your locker as you walk out of 3rd period English class (which is two floors away and on the opposite end of the building). ð¤®ð¤®ð¤® I know that certain âexperts" talk about cold outreach like itâs some sort of magical method of client acquisition. That once you learn their âformula,â youâll be charming strangers on the internet left and right, and youâll have to practically beat them away with a stick because theyâll ALL be dying to work with you... But thatâs bullshit. Cold outreach as a method of closing sales almost never works. And hereâs why⦠Just like that tuna sandwich, business owners can smell a sales pitch from a mile away... And just like that tuna sandwich, most go straight into the trash ðï¸ Thatâs why Iâll never stand behind the idea of âmass outreachâ as an actual client acquisition "strategy"... Sending out hundreds of generic and templated robo-pitches every single day is not strategic. It's a "spray and pray" numbers game and 1/100 times, you may get lucky. BUT... Don't come at me. Because there is an exception. If you're getting clients through cold outreach, it's likely because you're doing something different from 99% of other freelancers out there. Chances are, you're taking the time to genuinely reach out to a brand you know, follow, and admire... And are thinking with the long game in mind. So if you want your outreach message to stand out, get attention, and maybe even get a response⦠Then [hereâs the best tip]( I can give you⦠Start a conversation without the expectation of compensation. Drop your agenda. Drop your sales pitch. Drop your expectations. And just⦠be human. Have a conversation with them like youâre talking to a friend. Compliment them. Get them to like you. Tell them why you think they rock. But whatever you do⦠Donât make them an offer until rapport has been established. If you can shift your mindset around cold outreach from JUST a way to close sales and land more clients⦠To relationship building and planting seeds⦠Then I promise you will have wayyyyyy more success... And in case you missed it, this weekâs [YouTube video]( was all about EXACTLY what to do (and what not to do) when applying for gigs and sending cold outreach emails. This one was a juicy one, {NAME}. [Check it out here.]( Alex ð ABOUT: Welcome to the Copy Posse, youâre now part of the raddest, baddest crew of copywriters on the Internet over 300,000 strong.
