Dear Reader... [Dear Reader...]  Dear Reader, If I could recast the arc of my life, I would make one change. I would have moved to Dallas earlier. Like many of you, I am from somewhere else but now have my heart firmly planted in our community. I’m Brendan Miniter, and, as editor of editorials, I oversee the editorial page of The Dallas Morning News. I grew up as one of six kids in rural New York. My father was the police chief and then managed a manufacturing plant; my mother was the town clerk before launching a small business. Neither earned a college degree, and both did their best as they experienced the hardships that come with economic disruption. How I grew up helped shape my outlook on life and led me to the important work we do at The Dallas Morning News. I understood early what layoffs mean to a family and how important education is when I started pruning apple trees in the dead of winter in seventh grade so I could pay my Catholic school tuition. On the editorial page, we write a lot about the hottest issues of the day. But we never lose sight of this simple fact: Embedded in every issue are real people who will have to live with the consequences of the outcome. You can’t be in this business long without coming across the most compelling human stories imaginable. One focus on the editorial page is human trafficking. We were shocked to learn that tens of thousands of people have been trafficked in Texas. North Texans can be proud that Dallas is leading the fight nationally against human trafficking with important nonprofit organizations and new law enforcement approaches. This is a fight all of us can support. We hope readers find our election coverage helpful as they decide whom to vote for. Our recommendations for elective office are among our most popular articles, and our voter guide provides objective information not available anywhere else. And we hope readers engage with us. Every discussion with a reader – even those who disagree with an editorial position – sharpens our thinking. The editorials I have enjoyed the most since joining The News in February have offered a little humor. The one that stands out was satire – a fictional letter supposedly from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos that apologized for not selecting Dallas for HQ2. At our best we encourage people to laugh a little, perhaps think a little differently, and to always remember the people behind the stories. The real value of The News is that we have a personal connection to the community we cover. If you believe in our kind of journalism, please join us as a subscriber. You will invest in journalism that improves our community by telling stories that are relevant to our region. There are articles that make you glad you read The Dallas Morning News every day. Thank you, Brendan Miniter -Vice President and editor of editorials [Subscribe Today](   Share this email: [Manage]( your preferences | [Opt out]( using TrueRemove™ Got this as a forward? Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
