Dallas County beefs up jail staffing after federal judge orders change to cash bail systemÂ
With a federal deadline looming, Dallas County commissioners have approved 24 new positions as part of a plan [to assess whether suspects booked into the county jail can afford cash bail.](Ă‚
The additional personnel, plus overtime hours, will cost the county about $3 million a year. Commissioners' approval follows a Sept. 20 ruling by a federal judge ordering the county to stop setting bail based on a fixed schedule without taking into account whether suspects can pay.
County officials have been discussing reforms to the pretrial system for years, but the federal lawsuit filed in early 2018 seems to be accelerating the county's pace in making changes.Ă‚

From Selena to 'Coco', Dallas-area candidates are trying to find ways to connect with Latino voters
To encourage Hispanics to vote, Democratic candidates have knocked on doors while blaring Selena songs and called potential voters with the Coco soundtrack playing in the background.
Republican candidates have also taken their message door-to-door in Hispanic neighborhoods, with bilingual volunteers.
But with the midterm elections about a month away, a national poll revealed that 60 percent of Latino voters said they have not been approached by a campaign, political party or organization asking them to register or to vote.
That means candidates not only have work to do on the engagement front, [but also when it comes to building trust with Hispanic voters.](

Martinez stopped by a 7-Eleven for some coffee and gum after a sleepless night. It was inside the convenience store where Martinez [came up with the idea that would not just help control the quality of his restaurant’s drinks, but eventually change the industry.](
“What I was looking for was consistency,” Martinez says. “I was looking for a way to save my restaurant.”
