Dallas nursing home chain comes under fire for not evacuating before hurricane
When the police arrived at the nursing home during Hurricane Harvey, more than a foot of water filled the one-story building â along with the stench of urine and feces. Volunteers with boats stood ready to remove the 70 frail residents, many of them in wheelchairs.
But the man in charge of Lake Arthur Place nursing home in Port Arthur refused to allow the evacuation, according to a police affidavit detailing the incident. He had to be handcuffed before police and volunteers could begin taking the elderly to shelters and hospitals.
That incident has put a Dallas company, [Senior Care Centers, in the crosshairs of state regulators, who say it appears to have misunderstood state law and disaster protocols](. The largest operator of nursing homes in Texas, Senior Care Centers owns almost 100 facilities across the state, including 17 in the Dallas area and two in Port Arthur.

Lack of tips on missing Richardson toddler who was sent to alley leads to end of Amber Alert
The Amber Alert for a missing Richardson toddler sent to an alley as punishment for not drinking her milk [was discontinued Monday afternoon, but authorities are still searching for the girl](.
Sherin Mathews, 3, was last seen about 3 a.m. Saturday in her family's backyard in the 900 block of Sunningdale.
Officials issued an Amber Alert for the girl Saturday and were continuing to look for her Monday. Richardson police say the alert was discontinued because there were not enough tips.
"We need to have a specific vehicle or a suspect, and we lack that," police spokesman Kevin Perlich said. He said the Amber Alert could be reissued if authorities develop new leads.

Dallas Holocaust Museum officials hope bigger facility, focus will help fight prejudice, hate
On Tuesday, the Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new, greatly expanded facility that not only addresses the Holocaust but genocides and human rights struggles throughout history. [The makeover will also come with a new name: The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum](.
"We need a place that allows us to discuss human rights, diversity, respect for others and what that means for our city today," Mayor Mike Rawlings said in a news release. "The new Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum will be that place."
Set to open in 2019, the 51,000-square-foot complex at 300 N. Houston St. will be four times the size of the museum's current facility, which often reaches capacity. It will feature a 250-seat theater, two classrooms, courtyard areas for reflection and video testimonies from dozens of local Holocaust survivors, many of whom will be honored at Tuesday's 10 a.m. event.
City Hall: Since voting last month to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from an Oak Lawn park, [Dallas City Council has been inundated with scathing messages and threats.](

The State Fair of Texas inspires many things, from gazes of wonder at the spectacle of the thing to cases of indigestion from overindulgence in its fried offerings. [But it motivated Stephanie Lara, a 22-year-old Dallas cosmetology student, to create an epic manicure](.
"I just wanted to do something for the State Fair since I like going," Lara says.
The nail art says "State Fair of" on one thumb and has a Texas flag on the other. Other fingers get teeny cotton candy, a Ferris wheel at sunset, a corny dog, a pig, a ticket, an ear of corn, a turkey leg and a cowboy hat.
