Resources to inform and support your activism [afsc logo](   SATURDAY, JULY 27, 2024 Weekend Reading [AFSC and partners are helping people stay in their homes through our “Keep Gate City Housed” campaign.]( Photo: E Henderson Dear Friend, No one should ever have to worry about losing their homes. But last year, over 16,000 people in Guilford County, North Carolina faced eviction. Today, AFSC and volunteers are helping people stay in their homes through our “Keep Gate City Housed” campaign. Working with partners, we successfully advocated for the city to expand funding for the Tenant Education Advocacy Mediation program. This means more people will have access to services such as rental assistance, free legal representation, and mediation. [Read more about our efforts.]( Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism: [Support an arms embargo against Israel and a permanent cease-fire:]( Since the war in Gaza began, entire generations of families have been killed. Gaza lies in ruins. There are credible charges that Israel’s attacks on Gaza constitute genocide. Yet, the U.S. continues to send Israel weapons. It is time for this to end. Join AFSC in calling on your representatives to support an arms embargo against Israel and a permanent cease-fire. [Stories of divided families from North Korea:]( It’s been over 70 years since an armistice suspended active fighting on the Korean Peninsula. But today, many Korean Americans remain separated from family members in North Korea because of enduring conflicts. With support from AFSC, a video project is documenting the stories of these Korean Americans. Watch this interview with Doh Kuk Kim, who was separated from his siblings during the Korean War and longs to see them again one day. (Instagram) [Militarized policing is threatening democracy:]( Across the U.S., people advocating for social change are facing more brutal police repression and threats to their rights. In the past year, police have used force against college students calling for divestment, activists working to stop Cop City, and more. Learn about police repression in the U.S. and how we can speak out against it today. [International Court of Justice ruling:]( In a historic decision, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s occupation of Palestine – including Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem – is unlawful. The finding affirms what Palestinians, scholars, legal experts, people of conscience, and organizations like AFSC have been saying for decades. Read our statement. [Listen to the latest “Quakers Today” podcast:]( AFSC is sponsoring season three of the “Quakers Today” podcast, a project of Friends Publishing Corporation. The most recent episode asks, “Who is a historical figure you admire but whose words or actions trouble you?” [Listen]( in to explore the complex legacies of two notable Quakers: George Fox and Richard Nixon.
