Dear {NAME}, [Level 2]( seems expensive to many traders because they do not know of the benefits. I can’t trade without Level 2 so I thought I’d lay out some of the benefits to all those users that trade with basic real time or even no real prices at all. Buying shares in the stock market can be like going into a shop, ordering something without knowing the price and handing over a blank cheque. You wouldn’t dream of doing that but often stockbrokers are essentially asking you to do that very thing. So here is a list of Level 2 situations that bring big money benefits: - When you put in an order to buy or sell, say, $5,000 of a spicy stock online, many online brokers often come back and say, the market is not available. What they actually means is that you are trying to buy or sell more shares than the market makers want to deal with in one lump. If often happens when you really want to trade and there seems no sense to it apart from the market makers don’t want to play ball.. If they are willing to trade fewer shares, you will likely be able to see that on the Level 2, so you can break up your order and get your fill before they notice and jack up or pull the price on you. Without Level 2 it’s almost impossible to tell what is going on inside the market so you will miss your chance to get in or out of some or all of the trade. - Your broker might offer you only a limit order or a market order when you trade but only the buy and sell price, or even ask which way you want to go before they quote. With Level 2 you can see the price, how much is for sale or how much sales are out there and at what levels. You can put your order in anywhere you think you might get filled at because you can see the demand and supply and for example expect to get filled in the middle because of the way the book is moving. Without Level 2 you might be forced to bang in an order at or above the bid just to get filled, or below the offer so your order doesn’t get stuck waiting to be filled. This can turn out very costly. With Level 2 you can finesse your buying and selling and save a lot of money and stress because you can see what is going on. Trading without Level 2 is like driving in the rain without windscreen wipers on. - You use a voice broker and you want to buy. With Level 2 you know what market makers are doing and how much they are offering, you probably have a better view of the market than the broker who is just pumping your order to the market makers and taking what that is giving. The control of seeing the whole picture can save you a lot of money and earn you a lot of ‘respect’ or better still focus from the broker who knows he can’t mess up your order and get a pass on that. You can tell him to break up the order too if you see your volume is going to be too big to swallow, otherwise the broker is likely to come back with a stupid price expecting you to take it or leave it. - At certain times the bid offer spread is wide. You don’t want to trade then and with Level 2 you can see the book build up in the morning and see if the prices on offer are low liquidity trash that will sort out by 10am or the real deal. With just the bid and offer price it’s impossible to know, you are just guessing on whether you are going to get ripped off when you come to buy or sell. - If you don’t trade through the Level 2 book and are just going through the standard online broker ‘take it or leave it’ system, you are in a tough world of low flexibility and low visibility. Direct market access, DMA, is the way to go. You put your orders directly into the market and you are part of the order book. You are on the same playing field as the pros. However, that is daunting. It’s the real game. You are in the pit with the big beasts. If you aren’t on a level playing field with the pros, life is going to be tough. Trading off the order book is like playing tennis against a pro with your shoe laces untied. Getting [Level 2]( access is the first step to skill up for this. You will quickly see what you are missing. WHAT!!!! That share I can’t buy on my broker’s system is trading like mad on Level 2 and flying up to the moon!! That’s outrageous!! Yup and you’d never really know without Level 2. You’ll also see people getting skinned and realise that was you before you got Level 2. Access to Level 2 will take you to the next level and while it might seem dizzying to start with, soon enough you’ll be seeing things and coming to conclusions you never would have without it.
