Trump hopes his lies will be a distraction. His insults are meant to take away from the truth — that Donald Trump and his campaign twice sought foreign help to win the presidency. And when he broke U.S. law by withholding critical aid to Ukraine to extort their leader into helping his campaign, I led his impeachment and secured the first bipartisan Senate vote to convict a U.S. president. He has never let go of that humiliation, so he attacks me. Relentlessly. He knows that no one has been more effective at holding him accountable for his lies and misdeeds, and nothing infuriates his supporters more than the reminder of how I stood up to him.
