The policing of public space – and the prudishness of the British authorities – is hardly breaking news, but the story relates to a wider question about digital censorship which has been raging for the best part of 20 years. Emma Shapiro has been at the forefront of that debate, flying the flag for artists whose livelihoods – as well as politics – are compromised by the consistent censorship of women’s bodies. “Instagram’s guidelines correctly note that its policies ‘have become more nuanced over time,’ but this progress has been too slow,” she writes. “If art is not seen, did it ever exist at all?” Read more in her essay below. Staying with billboards, look out for the 100 winning Portrait of Britain images which are currently lighting up rainy bus stops and high streets on JCDecaux UK’s screens in January. Next door you can see a new Joel Meyerowitz display as part of Tate’s ‘Artist and Society’ project, which also features Deana Lawson and Farah Al Qasimi (keep an eye out for more writing on her in March). We’ll be down at Meyerowitz’s Dialogues opening at Huxley-Parlour on Wednesday evening, which features pictures from Cape Light and other renowned series.
