It’s a painful situation for the artist and filmmaker, but is also perhaps the reason for her work’s wide applicability, extending beyond Iran-specific gender critiques into something more resonant and timeless. Her new work, The Fury, “is about patriarchy; male power; men in uniform. It’s about all the countries where men in uniform rule,” she says. The two-channel film and nude portraits are fit for our fractious and warring times. During the exhibition’s run at Goodman Gallery in London, Neshat sat down with Ravi Ghosh to discuss her unique career as an artist and activist. Her take on the relationship between the two was typically shrewd: “When it comes to activism, you distinguish between what is wrong and what is right – who is evil and who is good. In the art world you don’t.” Read on for the whole conversation. This week we’ll be publishing a roundup of our favourite BJP articles of the year, from on-the-ground reporting at Les Rencontres d’Arles to exhibition reviews from Lismore, Venice, Berlin and more.
