Blending classical mythology with her well-beloved raw and intimate portrayals of human vulnerability, Goldin brings a haunting yet tender perspective of the body, the erotic and gender to the round, open and bright space in the West Village. Using grid photographs, the artist's autobiographical images are mirrored by photographs taken in museums of artworks from antiquity. The exhibition centres around two video installations â The Stendhal Syndrome and the title piece You never did anything wrong â and introduces new photographs, continuing her exploration of deeply personal and universal themes of trauma, memory, beauty, and grief. The eponymous video installation is an abstract, poetic reflection that intertwines the metaphor of a solar eclipse with the internal emotional landscapes of pain and reconciliation. © Nan Goldin, 2024, courtesy of Gagosian The Stendhal Syndrome is a more narrative and visually rich work that juxtaposes imagery from classical European art works alongside Goldinâs iconic photographs of her friends, lovers, and muses. Goldin uses her familiar slide-show format to take us on a journey through her images in a meditative space, with voiceovers from the artist narrating stories such as the myths of Narcissus and Orpheus. Named after the psychosomatic condition in which a person feels overwhelmed by beauty, often in front of great art, the film underscores the emotional potency of love and loss in art across centuries. Goldinâs selection of new photographs sits alongside some of her best-known work from the 1970s, â80s and â90s, including The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, which feels like a gesture to her earliest fans and also an encouragement to newcomers. Goldinâs recent works continue her tradition of capturing friends from marginalised communities, with a focus on the artistâs transgender peers, and sexual intimacy among the more vulnerable members of society. Though the showâs curation and design are straightforward, it is a strikingly beautiful, enchanting experience. Goldinâs visual language endures, somewhere on the constantly shifting boundaries between the personal and the public, the beautiful and the painful.
