Gelatin silver print, toned and processed, resulting from Durational Performance at Galerie Thomas Zander, Cologne, 4 March 2023. Featured at OFFSCREEN Paris 16-20 October. Today is the last day of the [Unseen Amsterdam]( so if you’re near the Westergas hotfoot over to see work by a new generation of image-makers, including Atong Atem and Maciej Urbanek in the curated Unbound exhibition, plus galleries such as TOBE Gallery from Budapest and AB Gallery from Seoul in the fair. Unseen kicks off a new season of popups and fairs in fact, en route to the big one - Paris Photo - which opens on 06 November. In London, [Frieze]( opens from 09 to 13 October in Regents Park and, although it’s an art fair, photography is well-established in it, and that includes documentary photography. Alec Soth is the latest talking head on frieze.com’s artist Q&A, for example, and meanwhile former Frieze global director Victoria Siddall recently demonstrated how important the fair has become by being appointed the new National Portrait Gallery director. Another big hitter is [Art Basel Paris]( in the Grand Palais from 18 to 20 October, for those who want to practise for Paris Photo; Paris also has more off-centre events though, including [Also Known As Africa [AKAA]]( an art and design fair for practitioners from Africa and its diaspora, held from 18 to 20 October at the Carreau du Temple. [OFFSCREEN Paris]( from 16 to 20 October is in the art deco Grand Garage Haussmann, and celebrates installations and moving and still images; there’s a whole floor devoted to Chantal Akerman and featured artists such as Alfredo Jaar, Tarrah Krajnak, and Laurence Aëgerter. There are also rich pickings for those who avoid fairs though, with a slew of events coming up. [Bristol Photo Festival]( makes a triumphant return 16 to 20 October (more about that later, because BJP is proudly sponsoring), while the [Photoworks Weekender]( takes place in Brighton from 24 to 27 October. Artist Felicity Hammond will unveil her major new commission from Ampersand/Photoworks in Jubilee Square, Photoworks and Photomeet will join forces to create a Superlab, and the 2024 Photoworks Annual, Multi Multi, will also launch. [Brighton Photo Fringe]( will also be running, as it’s open from 04 October to 17 November with free exhibitions by artists and organisations such as Laura El-Tantawy, Arpita Shah, Tish Murtha, and Peckham 24. Further afield, [La Nuu - International Photography Festival of Rubi]( from 01 to 31 October is small but well-considered, with exhibitions from 12 artists including sex worker and activist Maria Riot, Greek artist Maria Mavropoulou, and early colour pioneer Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii. [Organ Vida festival]( returns to Zagreb from 26 September to 03 November with the intriguing theme “Creeps and Butterflies”; referring to emotional states rather than men or insects, it includes edgy exhibitions by Zoe Williams and Zhao Qian, among many more. [212 Photography Istanbul]( is on show from 28 September to 13 October, including both European image-makers such as Dune Varela and Viviane Sassen, and less familiar Turkish photographers such as Damla Sandal, Okyanus Çağrı Çamcı, Gözde Ju and Gül Ilgaz. And finally, [Jaou Tunis]( is open from 09 October to 09 November, including a group show titled Assembly featuring image-makers such as Abdo Shanan, Mashid Mohadjerin, and Zied Ben Romdhane plus a solo show by Gabrielle Goliath. Previous iterations of Jaou Tunis also featured speakers such as Hito Steyerl, so expect a world-class series of talks and discussions too. [Build the way you want]( Announcing the 2024 Paris Photo Carte Blanche Student competition winners BJP reveals the four emerging image-makers selected to present their work at the French photography fair, which returns to the Grand Palais in November.
