In Tahiti, 16,000km away from the main Games hub in Paris, Jérôme Brouillet captured a magical shot of Brazilian pro surfer Gabriel Medina in the Olympic surfing competition this week. The athlete hovers mid-air in a Messiah-esque stance, one finger pointing to the heavens. The surfer received a score of 9.9 (though he was aiming for 10), the best so far at this yearâs Games. Brouillet explained that âthe conditions were perfectâ for the shot in response to critics claiming Photoshop or AI manipulation. Apple has launched its 2036 Hopefuls campaign to mark this summerâs Games, spotlighting sportspeople under the age of 10, from Finland, Singapore, Mexico, US and more. The continuation of the âShot on iPhoneâ series was photographed by Walter Iooss Jr, whose previous subjects include Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Serena Williams, using the iPhone 15 Pro Max. One image is a close-up of a young table tennis player holding the ball up to her eyeline, her weapon of choice balanced on her paddle. In another, a six-year-old Indian striker features mid-kick foregrounding the goal. Rooka © courtesy of Lina Geoushy, 2021 At [Rencontres dâArles]( earlier this year, The Olympic Museum and Photo Elysée co-produced [Sport in Focus]( to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in France. Curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer, the exhibition highlights the evolution of sport and photography, exploring a largely unpublished photographic collection imbued with drama and tragedy. The show closes in September. Away from the Olympics, The Middle East Archiveâs third book, [Football]( was met by eager fans in February with the beautiful game highlighted by photographers (both archival and contemporary) throughout the SWANA region. âNo matter the photographer, the sport was unintentionally present in almost everyoneâs work,â MEA founder Romaisa Baddar says. âThe sportâs cultural significance and popularity in the region has simply made it an integral part of what daily life looks like.â She was inspired to publish the book following Moroccoâs and the MENA regionâs successes in the 2022 menâs World Cup. The book features work by the likes of Abbas and Jinane Ennasri to Alex Webb. Weâre also enjoying some inspirational curated shots from Instagram page [@sporarts](. And finally, from the BJP archives, Lina Geoushyâs [Cleopatras Scoring Change]( documents female athletes fighting against Egyptâs biased sports culture. We meet Rooka, a dedicated footballer for Egyptâs Junior Team, and Malak, a gymnastics reservist for the 2020 Olympics finals in Geoushyâs BJP x Malala Fund Against All Odds commission. Geoushy states that, although she wasnât interested in playing into stereotypes of oppressed Arab women, emphasising their importance as role models was essential, especially in a country where their participation in sport is problematically low.
