Courtesy South Parade It’s been a packed weekend in London, with Offprint, Photo London and Peckham 24 (+ A Bigger Book Fair) all jostling for attention. There are still a few events on today: Witty Books presents a discussion between Max Miechowski and Alice Zoo on Britain’s disappearing coastline at Offprint (Tate Modern) at 13:15; Nigel Shafran is signing his Workbooks at the Loose Joints stand at 15:00; and Odette England will sign Woman Wearing Rings Shields Face From Flash an hour later with Skinnerboox. In a pleasing crossover, England’s project is also on show at Copeland Gallery for Peckham 24. Remember to head over to the Bluecoat Press stand if you’re down there today, where there should be a few issues of BJP left too… Let’s not forget the many other exhibitions on this month which tend to get overlooked amongst the fair and festival excitement. Baltic in Gateshead has just opened the first major retrospective of feminist activist and documentarian Franki Raffles, showing 300 images from her travels across the USSR, the Caribbean and Middle East alongside shots from domestic violence campaigns. The show accompanies Joanne Coates’ Middle of Somewhere at Baltic, in which the artist continues her investigation of social politics in rural northern England and Scotland, often through participatory methods. There’s a great interview with Coates in our next print issue in which you can learn more. Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection is now open at the V&A, with Tyler Mitchell, Alec Soth and Sally Mann some of the notable contemporary entries. If you’re after something more experimental and process-driven, then we can recommend hunting out James Fuller’s The antidotes in his excellent show at South Parade, London. The works are makeshift stills from the artist’s iPhone footage which he UV printed onto embroidered cotton mesh, which is then stuck onto mattress wadding to bring the image slightly off the wall. The nickel and copper sculptures are also impressive – it’s on view until 08 June. Further afield, a major Mickalene Thomas exhibition is about to land at The Broad in Los Angeles. We’ve published a beautiful, lyrical profile of the artist by Elisa Medde this week. You can read it again and again before the show tours to London’s Hayward Gallery next year. We’ve also put the finishing touches to our 2024 Ones to Watch issue, with nominators including Maison Européenne de la Photographie director Simon Baker, artists Jason Koxvold and Myriam Boulos and curators Elias Redstone and Yumi Goto. The 15 nominated artists will be revealed this Thursday alongside the magazine cover. Print & Digital Subscribers and Full Access Members will receive the issue soon.
