[Fotografia Europea]( is obviously more lens-based, with exhibitions curated put together by photography specialists Tim Clark, editor of 1000 Words; Luce Lebart, French correspondent for Archive of Modern Conflict and freelance curator; and Walter Guadagnini, director of Camera, Torino. They’re presenting 22 exhibitions under the theme Nature Loves to Hide, including big names such as Susan Meiselas and Luigi Ghirri, and less-known but fast-emerging talents such as Silvia Rosi and Karim El Maktafi; also included is recent BJP cover artist Arko Datto. But there are many interesting image-makers at Venice too, suggesting the dominance of lens-based media in contemporary art - watch out for an in-depth interview with Robert Zhao Renhui, representing Singapore, on BJP’s website this week. Also opening this week is Kyotographie in Japan, a small but influential photography festival which this year features exhibitions by Claudia Andujar and image-makers on the ground in Iran. We include[an interview with festival founders]( and couple Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi, who met when they bonded over a book about Japanese ghost stories. Also online at 1854.photography are  interviews with [Akin James]( and [Nadav Kander,]( photographers from different generations who nonetheless both provide key insights on contemporary Britain. In the UK, following the success of last year’s edition, the call-to-entry for the next volume of [Portrait of Britain]( opens at the end of April. Meanwhile, BJP’s Portrait of Humanity Vol. 6 is now closed for entries. Thank you to all who entered; the images are currently with the judges.
